Technology and Culture
Like any other field, technology also impacts culture and communication. The effect of technology on culture is in two positive and negative ways (Mitchel., 2019). According to Mitchel, technology has revolutionized how people create, consume, and share cultural content, leading to new forms of artistic expression, communication, and interaction. It also asks profound questions about whether the new phenomena erodes traditional cultural practices and homogenizes the culture. As technological developments during the industrial revolution created industry societies, the mass production of automobiles created a culture of commuters, radio, and TV created a culture of listeners, and the culture of Hollywood, MTV, reality shows, and the Internet is also creating a digital humanities and new culture (Gilkey, 2015).
One of the main contributions of technology to culture is Cultural Exchange and Globalization. Technology, especially the Internet and social media, created new opportunities for a rapid exchange of cultural ideas, values, and practices on a global scale. As a result, we have more cross-cultural understanding. Global internet trends can be a clear example.
Another effect of technology on culture is changing consumption patterns. Digital technologies have changed people's consumption, from daily needs to cultural content. E-commerce platforms, streaming services, and digital art galleries have created accessibility to a wide range of society where before it was for the privileged category.
